Emerald is the green variety of Beryl, a beryllium aluminium silicate mineral that is coloured by trace amounts of chromium and/or vanadium. It has a Mohs hardness of 7.5–8. Emerald is a cyclosilicate and occurs in colours ranging from yellow-green to blue-green. Unfortunately, most Emeralds have poor resistance to breakage.
The name Emerald derives via Old French as esmeraude and Middle English as emeraude. Also, from Vulgar Latin as esmaralda/esmaraldus, a variant of the Latin smaragdus. It also descends from Ancient Greek: σμάραγδος smaragdos meaning “green gem” from a Semitic language.
