Can crystals turn into liquid or gas?

Q. My daughter just asked if crystals can turn into liquid and/or gas. I assume they formed in liquid, but need massive heat? Could you help, please?

A. Without getting all technical and going into things like the “laws of thermodynamics” and such like, the simple answer is yes. Crystals commence their life journey in the molten core of the earth as gases, which then cool somewhat into liquids, that then cool down and form into solids in the form of crystals. So under the right circumstances, this process can be reversed, turning the crystal into a liquid or gas depending upon the amount of heat applied.
